What we do
The digital Prototyping Lab is a model making facility, manufacturing laboratory and fabrication knowledge hub within the Architectural Association School of Architecture. It is available to all current students and staff on an equal basis and enables access to the most current CAD-CAM technologies for individual projects or specialist courses.
Since its inception in August 2007, the lab’s aim has been to assist the teaching activities related to the various units and programs throughout the school and in addition to organize its own independent workshops exploring the limits and possibilities of architectural design centred around fabrication.
How it works
The lab is open six days a week (see opening times on the home page) and houses many different types of digital fabrication technologies that can be used by staff or students, on either a first come first serve basis, or by booking in advance via the DPL online booking system. Use of the equipment is generally free of charge, though there are charges for materials bought from the lab. For more information on the different services we provide, please follow their individual links on this website or talk to DPL staff.
What the future looks like
The DPL is currently undergoing an exciting transformation, expanding and upgrading its space and equipment so it can help maintain the AA’s reputation as a leader in architectural design and research. More details will follow soon…
Meet the staff…
Angel Fernando Lara Moreira – Head of Digital Prototyping
Architect and researcher currently working as Head of Digital Prototyping at the Architectural Association Digital Prototyping Laboratory. He studied architecture at UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) and received his Master’s in Advanced Architecture, Digital Tectonics degree from IAAC (Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalunya). Interested in researching how machines and rapid prototyping techniques influence the way in which architecture is conceived and built. He is a registered architect in Mexico where he is a founding member of Mexican firm TRABE Architects.
Henry Cleaver – Digital Prototyping Technician
Alvaro Lopez Rodriguez – Robotics Technician
Alvaro Lopez Rodriguez is a Spanish architect, holding an M.Arch from the European University of Madrid and a B.Pro M.Arch in Architectural Design (M.Arch AD) from the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. Prior to moving to London, Alvaro has worked with R&A and ALF Arquitectos in Madrid. He has a wide experience in digital manufacturing, working for the B-made at the Bartlett School of Architecture in the Digital Manufacturing department and with some collaboration with different projects like the Swiss pavilion for the Venice Biennale 2016.
The DPL employs a team of sixteen student assistants for the main lab and two extra assistants for the satellite DRL lab. Student assistants are trained by lab staff in all lab technologies and provide aid to fellow students in the use of different software and machine use as well as helping DPL staff with the day to day running of the lab.
If you wish to join the DPL team as student assistants, please speak with a member of staff from Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm.
